My great-grandmother, born on a Pennsylvania farm in 1890, used to say, "Devil take it!" when she was angry. She called out, "Murder!" when she was shocked.

My grandmother was an amazing woman who would NEVER say a curse word. Once, when she was very angry at a lady who had spoken ill of her daughter, she said, 'That…that…that woman at the well! ' It was the worst thing she could think to say.

My favorite curse comes from a friend's Irish grandmother, and doesn't contain any of the usual curse words. To someone who has been truly rotten, she says: "May the grass grow in front of your door. " (This implies you won't be around to walk on it or mow it... in other words, it's an elegant way of saying: "Drop dead. "!!! )
