If one was to go to the begginings of literary realism then its an idea to read George Elliots "Middlemarch", a novel that creates such a wide world of characters that one looks on them as real people Madame Bouvary by Flaubert is also fitting to the series with attention to details.

My two favorite authores in this genre as Mark Twain and Henry James. James' PORTRAIT OF A LADY is a classic of Victorian Literature as well as realism. Twain's work is humorous and perhaps easier to read. two of twain's are adventures of huckleberry finn and the innocents abroad.
