Muhammad, Islam's founder, was born in 570. He and his followers migrated to Medina in 622, and conquered Mecca in 630. Muhammad died in 632; after some dispute, Abu Bakr was made the first caliph. After two other caliphs, Ali ibn Abi Talib (who Shi'ites believe was the only rightful successor of the first four) came to power in 656.

Major figures of Islam include Muhammad (The Prophet), Abu Bakr (Muhammad's close collaborator and the first caliph), Ali (Muhammad's son in law). In the latter period important figures include Mehmed II, who successfully laid siege to Constantinople in 1453, theologian and philosopher al-Ghazzali, and Ibn Abd al-Wahhab, founder of the fundamentalist Wahhabism movement.
