Do lots of practical work before attempting to give the children written sums to solve. You need a supply of counters or small toys. Give the children a handful, count them, tell them to take X number away then re count what is left for the answer. They can also jump backwards on a giant number line.

Subtraction and addition are the basic terms required for counting. You must practise alot of questions to be able to count efficiently and rapidly. Take a pen and paper and write some figures by yourslf and the substrac them. Also, take some objects and perform substraction live.
