We gave our grandmother 70 of the dollar coins for her birthday. What a hit! Not only was it unusual it was appreciated. Not the same as giving her a check for $70! We also had food from her teenage favorites that we secretly asked about in the months leading up to the party.

One possible idea for the party would be to collect pictures that capture many moments in your grandmother's life. You can place them on one table at the party and allow the guests to enjoy them and see some of her history. They can become conversation pieces because I'm sure there are stories to go with the pictures.

If you want to throw a big bash for your good ol' grandmother's 70th birthday, you can rent a nice house boat and invite her closest friends and family. Of course, you would want to be somewhere where the waters are calm. If you are not near any bodies of water, you can take her to a nearby resort.

The most important thing to remember is that it is her birthday party, not yours, so be sure "big" is something she would want. The best policy is to surround her with those who love and want to celebrate her. If you do that, then you really can't go wrong.

Make a scrapbook or a short film out of pictures from her life. Track down people from the pictures to be at the party. Get recordings of music to go along with each era from the pictures. Have friends and family members make a donation to your grandmother's favorite charity instead of buying gifts.

A circa 1940 or 1950's theme would be a great one, and invite as many close family and friends that she might have, who can come.
