It depends on your skills and background. If you need income while you look for something better, consider working for a temp agency or going after freelance or contract positions. Although these jobs typically have no benefits and may not guarantee a steady paycheck, they might get your foot in the door for a job you really want.

The best place to look when between careers is into retail and restaurant business. These are always hiring and offer flexible hours. Waiters can make pretty decent money from tips at fancy or high volume restuarants like Applebees, Outback, or Steak houses. The best part is both Retail and Restuarants offer upward mobility if you have any talent.

A good part-time or temporary job is any job which provides an income without detracting from your overall goals and values. Temporary office jobs can pay well depending upon your experience. Alternatively, look for jobs outside your field to broaden your horizons.

For stop gap jobs try asking friends and neighbors if they need help around their home or at their business. See if you can get a job working for your town. Apply to every store that you can at the local mall. Go to large area employers such as hospitals, large companies, etc. and put in applications.
