What are some good exercises for someone with a herniated disc?

Answer by  mrsmyers (474)

You first of all want to make sure and do stretches because they are huge with helping with a herniated disc. The next thing you are going to want to do is any exercise that works your back and stomach muscles because you want them to be strong in order to help wtih the disc.

A great way of exercising for someone with a herniated disc is going into the water, and doing various exercises. Some would include swimming, aerobics, polo, etc. The water will give resistance, but your back won't have the constant pressure or pounding which would aggrevate your herniated disc problem further.

Herniated disc or prolapsed disc can be a painful experience. Good exercise that can relieve the pain will be slow walking with correct posture and swimming. Other exercise that I have tried before is by lying down on your back then lift up one leg alternately up to 90 degree.

A person with a herniated disc has to be extremely careful when exercising as this injury can remain for quite some time. Stretches, yoga and light weights are recommended.

Your goal is to strengthen your stomach and back muscles, but the correct exercises will help with the pain associated with this. Good posture helps reduce the pressure on the discs as stretching and bending exercises. You may want to combine exercises with visits to a chiropractor.

Anyone with a herniated disc needs to take it slow and be careful. Avoid running. Yoga would be a great exercise routine. It can be gentle and you can work your way up, and it really strengthens your entire body. Swimming would also be good exercise and you aren't putting pressure on your body.
