Tornadoes occur much more commonly, sometimes hundred of times during a storm, than hurricaines. With their increased frequency, they are not given names.

In an average year, about 1,000 tornadoes are reported across the United States, resulting in 80 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries. In terms of absolute tornado counts, the United States leads the list, with an average of over 1,000 tornadoes recorded each year. A distant second is Canada, with around 100.

Tornadoes stem form cumulonimbus clouds and are very destructive. They mostly happen in lower mid western states like Kansas. Like any other storms, they are usually given names. Naming them helps in organizing relief funds. It's easier for people to identify which storm their money is going to if it's "Tornado Joseph" rather than "that tornado that happened."
