Christopher Columbus discovered the new world for spain in 1492. He sailed three ships for the first voyage. The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. He thought he had discovered a shorter passage to India to trade spices. This is why the natives were called "Indians".

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. In 1479 he married his first wife Filippa. In 1485 he presented his navigation plans to John II of Portugal but failed to secure the funding. The second attempt at the Portuguese court (1488) was not successful either. Finally, after two years of lobbying in Spain he got funds in 1492.

Many people think Columbus is Spanish since he sailed under that country's flag. He was actually Italian. Another fact is that Columbus actually made four trips to the new world, not one. A final piece of information is that Columbus likely died from a disease he acquired during his travels.
