Earthquakes are the most common example, with the Richter scale counting each full 1. 0 point as 10 times higher than the prior 1. 0 value. For example, a 3. 0 quake is 10 times stronger than a 2.0. Bacterial growth and other exponential growth curves have rates that are often reported in log scales.

Log scales are used with any scientific data that is going to have a very large range of values but you want to plot them anyway. The most common example would involve data from a simple titration experiment.
