Freudian and Jungian psychotherapy deal a lot with dream interpretation. Adler also dealt with dreams a lot. From a Freudian standpoint, dreams are a means in which to fulfil wishes that are shielded from our conscious by being buring in our unconscious. I only really understand this theory.

I personally adhere largely to the Freudian belief that dreams are a manifestation of our collective unconscious. I believe dreams allow us to resolve issues or problems that are too stressful to be addressed while awake and conscious. Dreams also provide the privacy and safety to acknowledge secret desires.

Most theories center around an experential interpretation. Your dreams try to piece together your common and uncommon experiences, synthesizing them while you sleep. Sometimes you do get some doozies, though, that blend all of them!

Sigmund Freud believed dreams are a release of unconscious fears and desires. Witches, mystics, some modern psychologists and many cultures believe dreams are reflections of past lives and can also have prophetic meaning. One theory is our brains are so advanced that it makes predictions of the future through dreams.
