Afghans can be made using a ripple stitch pattern, squares, and also just doing single or double crochet. You can design your own if you know how to crochet. You can also buy books and magazines in many Craft and Bookstores. I like Michael's or Barnes and Noble.

There are several types of crocheted afghan patterns that are very common. The best know is the Granny Square. This pattern is well know because you can use leftover wool to make the squares. Another is the ripple pattern. This is a colorful afghan that you can use leftover wool with or different color skeins.
