There are cute little kits that your children can actually work with where they actually dig up things just like archeologists do. Those are a really good way to help your children understand more about archeology. You can also take them to a Museum for Children that offers hands on learning.

The most basic activity is reading. Books about the past, written at the child's reading level with inspire him or her. Going to history museums is also great.

If you have access to a sandbox, you could hide pieces of a puzzle in it. Have the kids look for the puzzle pieces and then put them together. This will simulate the work that archeologists do.

First of all get the kids on a trip to a museum. The next thing is the field work. Get the kids to an empty field where you previously burried some coins, vase and some animal bones. Let them find it. After this analize togheter each item and let them write it on a paper sheet.
