Using a natural detergent such as 20 Mule Team Borax is recommended. Sprinkle where needed; you can even add to floor wax and do floors. Sevin Dust is an insecticide that can be sprinkled on affected areas and is also used on chickens and other produce. If saving nests is your thing, bag it and freeze for several weeks.

There are many home remedies, some using vinegar, but I really hesitate to recommend without knowing what kind of bird- my remedy could kill them. I would consult an avian vet or go to a reputable seller like Jeffers to find a product for your specific bird. Plucking however, may not be due to mites, it may be psychological.

Common avian mite remedies include using a loofah when bathing, washing hair with tea tree oil, and rinsing nostrils with saline solution (salt and water).
