There are no clinically tested treatments for bacterial vaginosis except for antibiotics such as clindamycin and metronidazole. It would be unwise to treat such a sensitive area with unproven materials.

Since bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted disease, it may not require alternative treatment or any treatment at all, unless the symptoms are really bothersome. Some experts say that it is caused by overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina. Thus using any "alternative" treatment may make the symptoms worsen

Treatment includes using a vaginal enema with only hot water over the course of several weeks, using fragrance-free soap, and avoiding sexual intercourse without protection.

Foods you consume are the most important alternative treatments to bacterial vaginosis. The best foods to eat are different types of yogurt. Lactobacillus acidophilus is what to look for.

A boric acid douche is an ideal alternative treatment but the use of probiotics can also be very useful because prevents unwanted bacteria from multiplying and causing illness.
