Unexplained bruising can be due to illness but might also be medication or age related. Do you take aspirin, blood thinners, or dietary supplements? Or are you possibly distracted and bumping yourself and just not noticing until a bruise appears? Though usually not serious, ask your doctor.

First of all think of bleeding disease (like hemophilia) where even minor trauma can cause a lot of bleeding into the skin. Vitamin C deficiency causes blood vessels to be fragile and cause unexplained bruises. Finally diseases like Lupus and vasculitis can cause a similar problem.

There is a possibility that someone is moving around a lot while sleeping and bumping into things. If you bruise easily in general, you could be bruising yourself on the edge of the bed or on nearby walls or even on a partner if you sleep with one.

Unexplainable bruising should be checked with your doctor asap. There are a number of things that can cause skin to bruise easily, without us noticing. Several medications, and even certain diseases or deficiencies can lead to lead to this.
