Maintaining a curl is so difficult! There was daily use of activator and heavy moisturizers. The activators are pretty expensive. The hair gets all greasy and is not very pleasant. You will need touch ups when hair starts to grow again in order to maintain the look.
I guess this is the same as a Jheri curl. I thought this went out of fashion after the 90s because it was very difficult and expensive to maintain after getting it done. People used to sleep with plastic caps on their heads after getting the GEri Curls!!
I've heard that the harsh chemicals actually made your hair more brittle. posted by

You're right - it's the Jheri Curl and it was named after the person who started it; Jheri Redding. i don't think he's still alive! posted by

First, use a softener to loosen the hair and a solution to set the curls. Then, use a rearranging cream. It causes the tight curls to loosen and hang. Then set the loose hair on perm rods and use a chemical solution to permanently curl it.
