Gnats are small pesky flies that tend to circulate around warm areas, and swampy enviornments outdoors. They can bite, just like a mosiquito, but the bites are not severe. In some areas of the country where the gnat problem is really bad, the govenments actually try to fix it by spraying over lakes and swamp areas.

"Gnat" is often used by non-scientists to describe any really small flying insects, but they are not actually flies. You may be thinking of midges which actually are flies.

They are little bugs that fly in small swarms in the middle of yards. They don't bite or anything like that.
