This expression is used by and about women who had an absent father while they were growing up. Some had been abandoned by their fathers, others were living together with a father that didn't play any role in her upbringing.

Fatherless daughters are generally those whose fathers are no longer an active part of their lives. A daughter whose father has been incarcerated and who does not have contact with him is a fatherless daughter. A girl whose father abandoned her, and often her mother. They usually have no strong male role model as part of their life.
