Drain Gnats belong to the Insect family Diptera and are actually flys. They are drawn to stagnant water and may travel some distance to find it; such as the appearance of them in a suburban home in a desert. They are actually harmless; their Larvae live in the water of a drain and live on "scum" on the pipes.

Drain gnats are gnats that live in a drain. Most of the time they are simply common gnats that have set up housekeeping there and not a special breed. They can be removed by removing their living space in the crud in the elbow of the drain. They can't live on bare steel and water.
