There are movable backyard fire pits and built-in fire pits. The movable ones are usually made of metal are less expensive, and you can change your mind about where to put it depending on the gathering. We recently built a firepit with bricks and an installed a firepit in the middle. Being for our outdoor use we took time to see other set ups such as chimeras which are aboveground. There are also brick chimneys remote from the house by at least 50 feet.

Backyard fire pits can come in both open and enclosed varieties. For the open kind, which you can build yourself, you place stones in a circle and build a fire in the middle. You can also buy a ceramic vessel in which to enclose the fire, which is easier to contain.

There are many natural, free, and easily available substances for a project of this type. The most obvious building material to use would be stone, however, it is best to use a type of stone that is not very porous. Porous rock can trap water which can later heat and turn to steam, exploding the stone.
