Connection-oriented services is basically based on telephone system. It requires a session connection be established before any data can be sent while the connectionless service does not require a session connection between sender and receiver. In short, connection-oriented is a more reliable network service than connectionless.

All those services that require that the computer that is running the application keeps a connection stablished and running with the computer that gives the service (or The Server) are called Connection-Oriented, like chat rooms. E-mail, on the other hand, is a connectionless service because the other computer can be disconnected and it will still receive the message sent.

Connection-oriented services set up virtual links between end systems through a network. They require a session connection (analogous to a phone call) to be established before any data can be sent. They are called reliable network service, and they guarantee that data will arrive in the same order. They require a virtual link to be established between end systems.
