After surgery there's the possibility of infection, issues with blood clots, lungs, and the urinary tract. During surgery there can be damage to bladder or bowel, veins or arteries, reactions to anesthesia, cardiac arrest or even death.

With any surgery that involves anastesia there is a risk you will have a reaction to the sedation. Infection is the next high risk for complication. Dehisence (incision breaking open) is also possible and while uncomfortable it is not life threatening.

You could have difficulty passing urine, pain, numbness, swelling or bruising in the abdomen,and groin, or scrotal swelling in men. Hernias can re-occur. Of course, as with all surgeries, you can experience nausea, dizziness, affected appetite. If you have bleeding, fever, undue swelling, discharge from the surgical site you need to seek treatment immediately.

Inguinal hernia repair surgery is quite safe. There are risks of bleeding, infection of the site(this would be the most common complication), reoccurrence of the hernia, and complications from anesthesia.

There may be infection and bleeding, but these are controlled with antibiotics. You may have difficulty walking shortly thereafter, and there may be some pain.
