Chihuahua ears should be triangular-shaped and stand erect when the dog is alert. The interior of the ear is usually hairless and "papery", with veins visible through the skin. Depending on the dog, one or both ears may flop down when the dog is in a relaxed state. The interior and edges of the ears are often lined with fur.

This breed should have ears that stand upright on their own. They are held at a 45 degree angle when relaxed and up high when the dog is alert.

Chihuahuas typically have perky triangular shaped ears. Although there are chihuahuas with floppy ears too, some even have one perky ear and one floppy ear. There is a possibility that somewhere along the line one of the dogs on the family tree was not purebred if the ears are floppy.

If you have a very young chi, the ears may still look curled up and close, they will open. The AKC standard is large, triangular ears that are held erect- if yours are different, it may be a personal quirk, but if it varies greatly I would ask your vet to make sure there is not abcess or difficulty.

The breed standard for a Chihuahua will have large upright ears that even more erect when alert. They will flare to the sides at a 45 degree angle when rested. This is for a show quality dog.

Depends on the chihuahua. AKC breed standards are to have the chihuahua's standind straight up and at a 45 degree angle. If you are not showing you chi or it doesnt really matter to you then they can either go up or down. Many people prefer them up.
