What are are the differences in salary between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

The salaries of both a psychologist and a psychiatrist depend in large part these days on whether they are working for a managed care plan where fees are set. In general, though, a psychiatrist--who is a medical doctor and therefore always able to prescribe medication--will make more than a psychologist who may or may not have that capacity.

Typically, psychiatrists make more than psychologists -- something like around double the salary. Part of the reason is because psychiatrists are MDs (not PhDs like psychologists) which means they've had more schooling and prescribe medicine. That doesn't mean that there aren't psychologists that make more than psychiatrists though.

Psychiatrists generally make significantly more money than psychologists. This is because psychiatrists are medical doctors, and medical doctors are generally paid more than people holding other types of doctorates. Also, in most states, psychiatrists can write prescriptions, while psychologists cannot. Some psychologists may make more than psychiatrists, but, on average, psychiatrists are more highly paid.

The difference of salary between a psychologist and psychiatrist is huge and is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars difference. The reason being is that to be a psychiatrist one must be a degreed medical doctor in addition to have the same credentials as a psychologist. Thus it takes an additional 5 years of medical school.
