Almost every species of bear hibernates, as well as most every reptile including turtles, snakes, lizards, salamanders, and certain types of frogs and toads. Very few mammals hibernate, they migrate.

Many insects, such as the lady bug, gophers, certain snakes, frogs and bats, are true hibernators. This means that their heart rate, breathing rate slow down and they are slow to wake when the season has passed. Bears,(the most common animal identified when thinking of hibernation), are not true hibernators, meaning they wake up quickly and periodically throughout winter.
