As far as I can tell, there is no legal obligation to provide for step children. You are required by law to provide for your spouse. This is why alimony stops with remarriage. If child support is reduced because of the remarriage, then it is likely that there is an expectation of support.

You are only required to pay child support for step-children if you legally adopted them. You may be liable if they drive your car and have an accident or are truant and you are responsible for seeing them to school. If they commit vandalism or property damage, their biological parents are obligated.

Why don't you try treating them like your own children?

You don't have any legal obligation to pay child support for them or anything if you split up with their dad. But because you are married to their father and therefore legally share all your money with each other, you are both equallyresponsible for your share of their care.
