What advice can you provide me for dealing with a five year old whom is out of control?

Everything I do seems to make matters worse, she hits, screams and throws fits about everything.

Parenting is a big job and some kids provide more challenge than others. Do yourself and your child a favor and sign up for a course in parenting. Remember, too, that all behavior is meant to elicit a response. Stay cool and ignore, which takes practice!

Now is the time to get control of the issues before your child reaches the point of no return. There are several parenting books out there that offer sound advice, 123 for Christian parenting is one of the best. Time outs seem to work the best.

Give her time outs when she does this. If she comes out of them start to take away things like television, toys or other special things that you do together. Taking away some of these extras on it's own can be affective as well. If she's still out of control take her to the doctor to to test for bi-polarism.

The most important thing to remember is to be consistent with your discipline, and if you threaten a consequence, always follow through if she doesn't behave. It's also critical to show her that screaming will never get her what she wants. Remove her from the room until she calms down.

Try setting up a reward system. You can use tickets in a jar. Give and take away tickets based on behavior, then reward her after so many tickets.
