What advice can you give me for refinishing maple furniture?

I have a very old maple dinning room table that I would like to refinish at have it be a darker color.

If this is an antique you should not refinish it unless you do not mind reducing its value. If it's a more modern table the best option is to strip the current finish off using a commercial finish stripper. Once that is done sand any raised or rough areas to a smooth surface and apply any stain you want.

Be sure you want to do this first! In many cases, you will decrease the value if you refinish the item. If you decide to, be gentle removing the finish. Apply one coat, let it completely dry, then apply a second coat of varnish. Shine and polish, then apply again.
