There was not a person named Leatherface. The Leatherface character from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series is loosely based on the famous serial killer Ed Gein.

No, there was never really a Leatherface. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series are based loosely, very, very loosely, on Ed Gein. Even though the movie is billed as "based on a true story", you shouldn't believe it. Anyone can take a small detail and make something based on it, therefore making it "based on a true story."
