Question by  helma (34)

This birthday my friend presented me an umbrella tree which looks sickly and has 7 to 9 leafs. After 2 weeks it started to lose its leaves without turning to yellow. I looked for signs of insects but I can't find anything. Any suggestions to help me to save my tree which is too precious for me?

You may have over-watered it. That is the most common reason they lose leaves. To find out remove the plant from the pot and touch the soil around the roots. If they are wet, leave the plant unpotted until the soil dries out and repot with well draining soil.

Avoid excessive watering. The soil should only feel slightly moist and sticky after watering. Also, try placing your tree out of direct sunlight and into a moderately sunny area.

First I would Clean the remaining leafs for dirt and mites under the leafes. Wash leafs with "Safer Soap" which you can get at the nursery. Keep in a bright area and do not move around. Don't let it sit in water. Like a saucer. Prune dead leafs. Wait.

The problem may be one of a few different issues. The most common thing to cause the leaves to fall off is from overwatering. Make sure the topsoil is damp, but not dry and make sure there is not water above the surface of the soil as that would indicate flooding the plant.

You may be over watering your tree. try letting it dry out for a week or so and watering it sparingly
