You must have permission from the registered owner to drive the car. You must be able to produce the current registration, active auto insurance for the vehicle and your valid driver's license if you are stopped. You should know the owner's contact information in case there is a question about your possession of the vehicle.

You can drive a car that is registered in someone elses name if you have their permission. If you bought the car there is a time limit to transfer title.

If you have permission of the owner then it is okay for you to drive the car as long as the owner is responsible for the taxes and fees. If you are paying all associated costs for the vehicle it is illegal to maintain it in another person's name.
