Liquid detergent shouldn't stay on your dishes unless it isn't being rinsed off properly. Liquid detergent acts as a degreasing agent. Soap in general binds itself to the dirt (or food in this case) and makes the dirt or food able to be rinsed away. If you rinse the dishes thoroughly, there shouldn't be any residue.

I only use liquid detergent that is naturally safe. Leading brands tend to leave a horrible smell on the dish rags and I think this might stay on the dishes.

Liquid dishwashing detergents are formulated for dishes and get them sparkling clean. Just be sure to rinse the dish well in hot water to sanitize and remove any soap residue before drying.

You should only use a small amount of detergent in the water when washing dishes, this means that the amount on the dishes is very small.
