Should I send death announcements, in addition to putting an obituary in the paper?

An announcement would be appreciated for out of town friends. Many people who do not subscribe to a paper. Some papers do not allow obituaries to be viewed for free.

Absolutely! This will insure that interested parties will know of the death whether or not they read the paper. Mourners will appreciate your thoughfulness in the matter.

Death announcements aren't required but they are a more intimate way to notify people. If the deceased has friends and family in many areas it might be the only way to reach them all. Also, some newspapers limit the format and content of obituaries. If you want the message to be more personal, sending death announcements would be appropriate.

As hard as it is to do, those who are close enough to the deceased to deserve a death announcement should probably get a phone call instead.
