Compression waves in some kind of matter, such as sound waves in air. By definition, rarefaction is the drop in pressure resulting from the passage of a pressure wave. Note that compression waves are always longitudinal, that is, compression waves oscillate in the same direction as they travel.

Rarefaction is the decrease in density of a fluid as a wave passes by. Sound waves consist of alternating regions of compression and rarefaction that propgate through a fluid medium like air or water.
