A twitching leg could be caused by placing your weight on one side so that circulation is limited to the leg, then suddenly the circulation opens again when you move. This is not be the only answer; the leg should be checked if the problem continues.

You may have a condition known as "restless leg syndrome," which can affect people to varying degrees. Those severely affected may find that they are unable to sleep for their moving legs, or that their sleeping partners have a hard time sleeping through the commotion. Treatment is available for severe cases. See a physician if you need to.

The legs that jerk or twitch involuntary may be caused by tense muscles. It must be due to the fact that musles of the legs are overused. But if the symptoms of jerking persists it may be of another problem. Continuous jerking of the muscles may mean that there is a neurological problem. This must be checked by a physician.

PLMD, periodic limb movement disorder, characterized by involuntary leg twitching or jerking movements during sleep that typically occur every 10 to 60 seconds. It's not unusual to develop PLMD if you have restless leg syndrome, but the converse is unusual.
