My laying hens are losing their tail feathers and the feathers around their backsides. Could this be caused by mites or red ants?

Actually, it depends on where you live. If you live in the country it would be red ants. In the city, it would be mites.

I suggest you thoroughly look around the nest area for signs of these biting insects. Once you know which insect it is you can treat your hens.
