My Hyundai doesn't want to shift from first to second gear. What could be wrong?

If you have a manual then it's some internal damage like a broke sycro. If it's automatic your line pressure may be too low to make the transmission shift up.

It could be either one or two things with the solenoid/control system or the internals of the control system. Disconnect the shift solenoid connector (circular connect near the rear) and see if you can shift manually into second.
