You may have a transmission problem, Ford Escorts are notorious for having bad transmissions, You Battery may also be going bad. This is a fairly difficult repair, if you consider yourself a novice i would recommend either consulting your car manual, or seeking the help of a licensed mechanic to-be safe.

Check your battery connections first, if its a five speed you can tap the starter. If its an automatic I suggest you fill the battery with some water if you think it's the battery.

If the starter is bad it will be a ticking noise. If it sounds like it will almost start the starter probably works.

I would have to say that the problem is with the starter on your car. The rattling noise you hear could be from the starter cables being loose. Another problem could be that the starter motor is starting to fail or commonly the ignition switch could be faulty and need replacing.

Sounds like the starter is either loose or is wearing out. Locate the starter, remove it if you can, and get it tested at a auto parts store.

it could be a problem with either the alternator or starter motor. go to a garage to ford dealership to get it fixed. it could also be a problem with the engine mounts and that would also require work from a garage.

The best thing to do is have a mechanic look at it to find the rattle. As for the hard starting, make sure that the timing is set correctly and that your plugs are gapped right and in good shape.

The starter looks like it could be having the cable loosen or the starter could have a failing motor or ignition switch needs to be fixed and replaced.

Take a lot at the fan belt to see if its loose and if it is loose, try to tighten it up. Otherwise, it could be something loose in your wheel
