death

Question by  Tammy (585)

My father just passed away, now what?

I'm sure there's lots that needs to be done, but I'm not sure what or where to start.

You need to obtain a death certificate from a doctor or coroner. Then you need to decide whether to immediately move his body to a legal place of rest like a funeral home. A few states will allow you to bury him in the backyard.

I am so sorry for your loss. This will be a very challenging time for you. Gather as much emotional support for yourself as you can. With emotional support, the details of settling your father's estate will be less stressful.

Now you take the time to remember the good times, the lessons he taught you, and grieve your loss. Your father would have wanted you to move on in the most healthy way possible.

1. Get a formal death certificate. 2. Find his will. Find out if he had an attorney. Or get one, and begin probate. 3. Contact the credit bureau, have his credit file frozen so no one can get new loans in his name or steal his identity.
