No, this isn't normal. You should probably have your dog checked by your veterinarian. Sometimes dogs will cough due to conditions like collapsed trachea, which is minor, but coughing can also be a sign of problems with the heart. You'll want to get a problem like that diagnosed as soon as possible so that medications, if needed, can be started.

Is it something new, or has he always done it? If it's new you should run it by a vet as it could be a sign of infection. But if he's always done it then it is likely normal for him. Do you have wood or electric heat? Chances are his membranes could be getting dry.

This is not normal. Your dog is most likely either allergic to something in his sleeping area or is having gastric reflux when lying down.

Are you sure your dog is coughing? Often times the grunting associated with dreams/nightmares can sound like a cough, but isn't in actuality. However, coughing while lying down can be a sign of a heart problem, particularly if the coughing seems to increase upon his standing up. I would recommend a trip to your vet to be safe!

This cough can be caused by allergies, or a more common cough, the kennel cough. If you take him to the vet your vet can prescribe medicine for his cough.
