Try checking your thermostat to see if the temperature of the house is reaching your target temperature. If the air conditioner is overshooting your target temperature, you will need to call an HVAC specialist to identify your problem, which is probably electrical in nature.

Probably the best thing to do is to call a handyman or repairman to come and take a look at it. If you don't have this luxury then try to find the breaker box in your house and flip the breaker that is used for the a/c unit.

First and cheapest item would be check the thermostat, Make sure its working properly. Also What temperature are you seeking? If your seeking 60 degree's it possible that your not gonna get it. Check your windows and doors for air leaks. check by raising the temp on thermostat till shutoff

You are probably going to have to fix the switch. They are really cheap but the fix can get expensive.

If your AC isn't shutting off, it's a couple problems: It can't reach the set point or the contactor or thermostat is stuck. If it can't reach the set point, it can be incorrectly sized, low on charge or overcharged. If a relay is stuck, it likely never goes off.

AC Units greatly differ by brand. Since there are some many types of brands I would insist that you refer to your particular AC User Manual. They are quite useful.
