If the odor is in the mouth, you may have dental abcesses. Abcesses on the body smell putrid, and since they can close up they may not be readily apparent. A cat who has difficulty grooming may also smell. Healthy cats shouldn't smell. Check with your vet.

If the problem is with something other than the cat's coat, which you can handle with a cat shampoo, check with your vet.

Use a wet, soapy rag and wipe the cat as if petting, to bathe it. If it's a continual smell, see your vet as it could be a fungus.

There could be health problem associated with your cat's problem, but I've also found that some cats just really suck at keeping themselves clan. If you aren't nothing any other symptoms (change in eating habits, breathing difficulty, blood in stools etc. ,)You may just need to help your cat say clean.
