My 5-year-old lied to her teacher that our dog, Willie Bananas, was hit by a car and died. How should I react?

I would talk to her about it, and remind her that lying is wrong. Have her apologize to the teacher.

Ask your child why they lied to their teacher. Then try and teach your child why it is wrong to lie. Use examples similar to the one that they used on their teacher and ask them how they would feel if someone said that to them. Use the time effectively to ensure that they understand that it is wrong.

I teach 5 year olds, I think the best thing to do is talk to her calmly about lying and what kind of consequences lying can cause,so she'll understand that making up stories like that isn't really a good choice, and hopefully won't do it again.

You should not react very rudely as your child is just 5 yr old. At first, you must make him/her understand the consequences of telling a lie. Just scolding or slapping will not do the job.
