Question by  Meeshell (26)

Is "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne a short story or a novella or a novel?

My teacher said it's a short story, but it's really long.

It is a short story. The length does matter, though the style in which it is written is what makes the difference. A regular novel contains more parts than just a short story. A novel usually contains more extraneous details though a short story usually is only about a smaller time period or event.

Some short stories are fairly long. A novella is still longer than "Young Goodman Brown" which I seem to remember was about 20 pages when I read it last semester. Once you're in high school and beyond a short story stops being 5-10 pages. A novella would be something like "The Awakening."

Young Goodman Brown is a short story. The plot of the story is Puritan New England. The main theme of the story is the conflict between good and evil in human nature. It is often generalize as allegory. According to Herman melville this story is as deep as "Dante". It is a good story indeed.

I believe that Young Goodman Brown is a short story, but it can feel like a long novella or a novel. It has a big story to it and just feels long.
