Pine needles are actually the leaves of the tree. They contain chlorophyll and perform the photosynthetic processes that produce energy for the plant to grow. The unique structure of the needles and their waxy coating, allows them to withstand seasonal changes, so that they are not shed in winter as other tree leaves.

Pine tree foliage will always be a needle which is why they are commonly referred as evergreens. When needles fall out new green needles are replaced all year long.
