The concept of Festivus was invented by the father of one of the Seinfeld writers. When the other writers heard about it, they decided to use it in an episode. They added some details to the original concept in order to make it more funny. One of the added details was the use of the aluminum pole.

While Festivus was created by writer Dan O'Keefe and originally celebrated in 1966, it gained pop culture fame when son Daniel O'Keefe, a screenwriter, made it a central theme for an episode of "Seinfeld." The Festivus pole depicted in the episode was not part of the original O'Keefe family celebration.
