Question by  andaman (240)

Is there a way to see through a door peephole in the OTHER direction?

I always worry that there is some type of lens that someone could use to be able to be able to look in, even though a peephole is designed to look out.

Yes, "Reverse Peephole Viewers" are devices that allow someone to see into a peephole from outside a home. They can be purchased for around $90 USD.

That is so frightening if it is true... but it seems likely that some fancy lenswork could reverse what the peephole lens could do.  add a comment

I just cover up my peep hole with a decorative ornament. Or if you are at a motel cover it with a book of matches wedged in to cover it like a flap. Just cover it up!!!  add a comment

There is a slim possibility of seeing through the other direction of an older peephole. The lighting on the inside has to be brighter than outside the door and this makes it possible to see through the peephole. I have noticed with older peepholes in hotel and motel rooms.

The only way someone could look into your home through your peephole is if it installed backwards. You would know if this was the case because you would not be able to see out. If you can see out, no one can see in!

Wrong. If one you have the two older styles of peephole there is a device you can buy for arougd $70.00. Law enforcement has been using it for years. But that can be defeated by taping/tacking a flap of dark material over the inside. Also prevents door killing.  add a comment

A peephole is a simple fish-eye lens, and anyone with decent eyesight can see through backwards with practice by shielding from outside light, or with another lens or even a camera. Best to keep valuable things out of it's view. A coat rack inside the door helps to limit view.
