Many communities in California (such as Santa Barbara) do have a center that accepts "electronic waste" for recycling. This includes "video cassettes" (VHS). Such places include UCSB (the Davidson Library), as well as many other "TechnoTrash" locations at UCSB, and ABOP recycling at David Love Place in Goleta, California.

VCR tapes can be recycled in a recycling bin for the same plastic plastic type. Most VCR tapes were made before the plastic type labeling was required, but may state on the bottom what material they are made from.

You can donate used video cassettes to some non-profit organizations and they prepare your video cassettes for possible reusing. Also some local charities pick them up and redistribute them.

There's a website called Alternative Community Training (ACT) that accepts cassettes (among other things) as donations. The good thing is, it's tax-deductable, so that offsets the price of sending them.
