Is split bark on trees a sign of anything?

NOt that I have ever seen, many trees have split bark naturally. If your tree does not do this normally it could be a cause of concern, maybe it is not getting enough water? You can speak to someone at your local nursery to deterimine if split bark is normal for your type of tree.

Splitting bark on trees can be caused by a variety of reasons. Frost or cold weather can cause splitting as well as sunscalding.

This Depends on If you have Children. When you have kids- Not a sign. If you don't- Probably a sign of angry squirrels

There is not one single reason why the tree's bark is splitting. During late winter going into spring the bark and the branches could be caused by the Freezing and the thawing repeatedly. The spits could also be made from previous wounds or infections. Fluctuating growth spurts with in a short term can lead to the splitting of the bark.
